Joey Hyatt, a Christian Studies major and a newlywed, was attempting to start a forklift inside a metal storage container at the Travelers Rest location where he worked as a donation attendant at the time of the explosion. One eyewitness told the Tribune the blast, which was heard at city hall and various other locations throughout and beyond town, lifted the storage container off of the ground.

Hyatt, who suffered 2nd and 3rd degree burns on 40 percent of his body, was airlifted to JMS Augusta Burn Center. He has undergone extensive skin grafts and is expected to remain in I.C.U. until at least mid-May, according to recent reports by family members.
Beginning at 9 a.m. on Saturday, Miracle Hill will be selling baked goods and coffee in front of the store. Beginning at 11:30 a.m., hot dog and hamburger plates will be available for purchase.
All of the items are being donated, so 100 percent of the money that is raised will go to support Hyatt and his family, according to event organizers.
Live music by bluegrass band The Bedhead Boys will take place from noon to 3 p.m., and there will be activities for children throughout the day.
