TRAVELERS REST, S.C. – The Travelers Rest Lions Club recently announced the beneficiary of its annual Christmas project will be the Travelers Rest Police Department Toy Drive.
In considering projects, TR Lions look for local organizations which keep proceeds in the community, and the Christmas Toy Drive has proven to be a successful, long running program with a history of making area children happy, according to Lions Club officials.
"We collect and distribute toys and other useful items for local needy children who may otherwise go without on Christmas morning," said drive organizer Luann East, who is also a Lions Club member.
Started in 1999, the program now serves over 300 disadvantaged children each year.
"Children should not have to understand that life is hard and sometimes there just isn’t enough money for Christmas presents," East said. "A child believes that Santa Claus will find them on Christmas morning."
In addition to the donation by the Lions Club, individual Lions Club members will be making contributions to the toy drive as well. Community members are invited to make donations of new toys, cash and/or gift cards at City Hall, located at 6711 State Park in Travelers Rest.
Toys will be distributed from City Hall the weekend of December 21.
