Slater-Marietta Elementary News Briefs: Polar Express Day, multiplication party, more...

  • PDF

Polar Express Day:

Kindergarten students enjoyed an annual tradition recently. One day is designated as Polar Express Day, and from reading to writing to math, all activities center around the magical Polar Express. At the end of the day, students receive their tickets and board the “train.” Their experience comes complete with hot chocolate and cookies, making memories to last a lifetime!

Data Collection/Entry:

Donna Tesner’s second grade students practiced their data collection and data entry recently. By measuring and describing common items they began to learn this important scientific process. Students measured objects and then identified them in specific, not opinion, words. Once all items were evaluated, students made charts and graphs to demonstrate similarities and differences.

Multiplication Party:

Third grade students have been learning those all-important multiplication facts. These will be used throughout their lives. Whether figuring out the cost of a tank of gas or knowing how many cookies will be needed for a birthday party, we use multiplication facts almost every day as adults. Students earned a special treat during a multiplication party. Julie Harris’ students earning recognition were Jacob Tankersley, Britini Rogers, Hope Crain, Bryson Aiken, Troy Hartin, Ana Samford, Nahw Villar, and Alex Ward.

Kindergarten and first grade registration

Registration for kindergarten and first grade in Greenville County Schools will be held Tuesday – Friday, January 22 - 25, 2013. Children who will be five years old on or before September 1, 2013, must enroll in public or private kindergarten, unless the parent or legal guardian signs a waiver. Any child who will be six years old on or before September 1, 2013, must enroll in first grade. Visit your Greenville County public school January 22 - 25 to register.

To enroll a new student in kindergarten or first grade, a parent must present the following at registration: State-issued birth certificate; properly completed immunization certificate or religious exemption certificate; and two forms of proof of residence (two documents required, such as a current utility bill or copy of lease agreement).

For your child’s school assignment and other information, visit the Kindergarten Registration website or call INFOLine at 355-3100.

Colonel William Moultrie visits with students

Third grade students learn about South Carolina history, including the famous people, places, and events that have helped shape our state. Students recently stepped back in time with a visit from Revolutionary War hero Colonel William Moultrie (as portrayed by Gil Garrett). Colonel Moultrie spoke to students in character as he explained the actions he and other famous South Carolinians took during the Revolutionary War. He gave details of a very early battle in the harbor of Charleston that had a major impact on the final outcome of the War. When classroom lessons come to life, students are much more likely to build brain connections that store information for long-term use.

Family Traditions

First grade students find out it is never too young to start typing and using computer programs to express your thoughts on paper. As part of their families and traditions unit, students will use the Microsoft Word program to type their final copies of stories they have written about their own family traditions.

  • PDF

Back to School:

Teachers wasted no time in getting back to the task of learning following the winter break. There were books to be read, stories to be written, math problems to be solved and science to be discovered. The second grading period ends on January 17 and there is still much learning to be done.

Winter Poetry:

Linda Mlay’s students spent a week studying winter poetry. Students learned that poetry can be funny, sad, factual, or nonsensical just like any other writing. Poems may have characters, setting, main idea, tone, and voice. After writing their own winter poem or choosing a favorite from their study, students drew winter scenes to accompany their poem and assist others in seeing the winter theme.

Teacher Workday/MLK Holiday:

There will be no school for students on Friday, January 18 or Monday, January 21. Friday is a teacher workday and Monday is Martin Luther King Day.

Second term report cards will go home on Thursday, January 24.

TRAVELERS REST, S.C. – Matt Casella, a chemistry teacher at Travelers Rest High School has been awarded the Childers Foundation Teaching Excellence Award by Furman University. The award is given each year to one elementary and one secondary teacher in their first year of teaching.

According to Furman officials, the winners exemplify excellence in the classroom, and the recognition is meant to encourage the recipients to remain in the field of education and to provide them external validation.

The Childers Foundation Teaching Excellence Award is the brainchild of Marybeth Bunting Childers, a lifelong educator, who with her husband, Alfred, an entrepreneur and former member of Furman’s Board of Trustees, established the award.

Residents of Cary, N.C., the Childers graduated from Furman in 1980 and have been supportive of the creation of alternative educational opportunities for children. Marybeth Childers founded the Magellan Charter School and the Resurrection Lutheran School.

The award winners are chosen annually by Furman faculty, school administrators and mentor teachers who have worked closely with the recipient teachers, all of whom are Furman University graduates.
