Greenville Rec waterparks opening Saturday

GREENVILLE, S.C. – Greenville Rec's three waterparks will open for the season Saturday, May 25.
The first 100 people in line at each park will receive a goodie bag full of coupons and discounts from Greenville Rec and other partners, according to Mike Teachey, director of community relations.
The three parks – Otter Creek, Discovery Island and 7th Inning Splash – will be open weekends and Memorial Day through June 2.
On June 7, Otter Creek and Discovery Island will begin operating seven days a week, and 7th Inning Splash will begin operating seven days a week on June 15.
Schedules and rates for each park are posted on the Rec District's website.
About the Waterparks:
Otter Creek, located in northern Greenville County, features a tube slide, two body slides, toddler slide, spray pad and an expansive zero depth entry swim area.
Discovery Island, located in Simpsonville, features a giant tube slide, body slide, lazy river, zero depth entry interactive play area and the upstate's only FlowRider, where visitors can surf on boogie boards.
7th Inning Splash, located in Piedmont, features a giant bowl slide, large spray pad and a full-sized swimming pool.

TRAVELERS REST, S.C. – The Travelers Rest High School Symphonic Winds presented their annual Spring Concert Thursday evening.
The program included a variety of music from patriotic to Mozart to African tunes and ended with an arrangement of the YouTube hit "Gangnam Style", complete with conductor Carl Wylie performing the dance, which he had promised to do if the band received a superior rating this spring.

Carl Sandburg Home NHS to host free folk festival Monday

FLAT ROCK, N.C. – Carl Sandburg Home National Historic Site will host the 27th annual Carl Sandburg Folk Music Festival from 10 a.m. - 4 p.m. Monday, May 27.
The free festival honors Sandburg and his preservation of traditional folk music as found in his The American Songbag, a collection of lyrics and tunes to 280 songs published in 1927.
Festival musicians will demonstrate the tradition of performing live music to tell stories while capturing the heritage of America through song.
• 10 a.m. – The Shivers stage an old-time radio show with music on banjo, autoharp, fiddle and mandolin.
• 1 a.m. – Charles Wood and Micah Hanks perform old time and bluegrass music on banjo and guitar. Wood has won many prestigious banjo awards and has appeared on the David Letterman show performing with Steve Martin and Earl Scruggs.
• 12 p.m. – Buddy Davis and Pat Corn are on stage playing acoustic guitars. Corn is a finger-style guitarist with smooth vocals and has appeared with many top name artists, including the Buddy Rich Orchestra. Davis has played with many great musicians such as Doc Watson and David Holt. They will be playing many tunes from Sandburg’s The American Songbag collection.
• 1 p.m. – Pop Ferguson and the Blues Revue will take the stage. One of the hottest Blues bands in the area, they generate excitement everywhere they perform.
• 2 p.m.– Jamie Laval performs. One of the premier Celtic fiddlers on the international music scene today, Laval creates rapt audiences with his intensely passionate performances of traditional music of Scotland, Ireland, Brittany and Quebec. “Laval is one of the hottest fiddlers out there...this act has been turning heads wherever it plays.” -Asheville Citizen-Times
In addition to the musicians listed above, Steve and Jean Smith will be performing hammered dulcimer music at the historic barn area from 11 a.m. - 3 p.m.
The folk festival, which began in 1987, is supported by the National Park Service, Friends of Carl Sandburg at Connemara, Eastern National and a grant from the North Carolina Arts Council.
Carl Sandburg Home National Historic Site was authorized October 17, 1968, and celebrates it’s 45th anniversary this year. The park is located about 25 miles north of Travelers Rest off U.S. 225 on Little River Road and is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily, except Christmas Day.
