John Portman Pickens, 92, of 3232 Tigerville Road, widower of Ruth Taylor Pickens, died January 9, 2015.
A native of Oconee County, son of the late Eddie Carlisle and Alpha Powell Pickens, he was a U.S. Army WWII Veteran and a member of Mountain View United Methodist Church. Mr. Pickens was a 1949 Clemson University graduate with a Master’s Degree, was Founding Principal at Foothills Vocational School with 34 years as an Educator with Greenville County. Mr. Pickens was a recipient of Greenville County Proclamation Day.
Surviving are one daughter and son-in-law, Cindy and Kent Crain of Travelers Rest; three sons and daughters-in-law, Richard and Kathy Pickens of Greer, Tommy and Kim Pickens of Simpsonville and Rev. Jerry and Rebecca Pickens of Cross Hill; one sister, Anita Elrod of Anderson; seven grandchildren and fourteen great-grandchildren.
Mr. Pickens was predeceased by one son, Gordon Pickens.
Funeral services will be held 3:00 p.m. Sunday at Mountain View United Methodist Church conducted by Rev. Chris Arries. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Pallbearers will be Gregg Pickens, Todd Pickens, Brad Pickens, Kevin Pickens, Justin Crain, John Stoehr and Josh Painter.
Visitation will be held 1:00-2:45 p.m. Sunday at Mountain View United Methodist Church.
