Update: Greenville County deputy in fatal wreck placed on administrative duty

Update (06/15/15): The Greenville County deputy involved in Saturday evening's fatal wreck has been placed on administrative duty, according to a statement (below) from the Greenville County Sheriff's Office.

"This is a tragic event for everyone involved. The family of Mr. Williams, and the deputy involved, are in the thoughts of the Greenville County Sheriff’s Office during this devastating time. The Greenville County Sheriff’s Office is cooperating with the South Carolina Highway Patrol during the investigation into the collision. The Sheriff’s Office is also conducting an internal investigation and the deputy has been placed on Administrative Duty at this time pending the conclusion of the investigation."

TRAVELERS REST, S.C. – A moped driver was killed following a crash involving a Greenville County deputy on Poinsett Highway Saturday night.

According to the Greenville County Coroner's Office, 47-year-old Alan Craig Williams, of Travelers Rest, was driving in the left lane around 11:40 p.m. when he was struck from behind by a deputy who was passing another vehicle near the intersection of Roe Ford Road, about one-half mile south of Travelers Rest city limits.

All northbound traffic was rerouted as crews worked the scene of the crash.

The wreck remains under investigation.
