Travelers Rest Farmers Market awarded $46K grant
TRAVELERS REST, S.C. — The Travelers Rest Farmers Market received a grant from the U.S. Dept. of Agriculture to increase awareness of the ability to use SNAP benefits at farmers markets, it was announced last week.
SNAP offers nutrition assistance to millions of eligible, low-income individuals and families.
S.C. Dept. of Agriculture records indicate that there is low participation from SNAP benefit users at about one-third of markets in the state who accept this form of payment.
One of only two markets in South Carolina to get chosen, the Travelers Rest market received $46K under the grant program.
The implementation of the grant will include performing outreach to SNAP benefit users, ensuring they know they can use their benefits to purchase fresh, local food at the Travelers Rest Farmers Markets.
According to Travelers Rest market director Adrienne Hawkins, local efforts will be largely based on best practices and case studies of other markets who are successfully implementing SNAP programs.
