Updated: Greenville man killed in Poinsett Hwy. moped wreck, police search for SUV

TRAVELERS REST, S.C. — The Greenville County Coroner's Office has released the name of the moped driver killed in a wreck on Poinsett Highway in front of Furman University early Thursday morning.

Coroner B. Parks Evans said 35-year-old Jose Antonio Martinez Vasquez, of Greenville, was driving southbound when he was struck from behind around 4:20 a.m.

Travelers Rest Police Chief Lance Crowe said they believe three vehicles were involved in the collision with the moped. The first vehicle is believed to have struck Vasquez and the moped, while the second vehicle is believed to have struck only the moped. A third vehicle was involved but fled the scene after a passenger exited the car and assessed the damage, according to witnesses.

Crowe said they are searching for a red or burgundy 2006 Chevy Tahoe or Suburban. Originally police had said they were looking for a Ford SUV, but the description changed based on evidence gathered by the Greenville County Sheriff's Office accident reconstruction team.

It is unknown if the SUV police are searching for struck the moped, Vasquez, or both, Crowe said.

Vasquez was pronounced dead on the scene.

Anyone with information is urged to call the Travelers Rest Police Dept. at 864-834-9029.
