Cornfield Angels to continue annual Christmas tradition on Saturday

SLATER, S.C. – On Saturday, volunteers will give away Christmas presents to needy children from across northern Greenville County, continuing the 20-plus year Captain Corn Toy Drive tradition started by Jimi Turner.

Well known to area residents as “Captain Corn,” Turner passed away in 2013, but family members have continued the tradition of the toy drive in his name. (Video below.)

This year's Christmas party and giveaway begins at 3 p.m. on Dec. 19 at the Slater Hall community center, located at 5 Whitney St. in Slater.

Parents do not need to sign their children up. Presents will be organized by age group and gender and will be given on a first-come, first-served basis. The only requirement for participation is that the children receiving the gifts must be present. Parents may not claim items for children who are not present at the donation center.
