Local author, illustrator to kick off new 'Visiting Artist Series' in Travelers Rest

TRAVELERS REST, S.C. — The Travelers Rest Makers Company will kick off their new "Visiting Artist Series" with local resident and nationally recognized author and illustrator Tim Davis.

Davis is most widely known for his work with Highlights children’s magazine creating their unique Hidden Pictures, and he has also written and illustrated seven children’s books: the "Mice of the Herringbone" series and the "Tales of Dust River Gulch" series.

Throughout the month of February, original works, sketches and books by Davis will be available in the shop. He will also be hosting a four-week workshop for adults on writing and illustrating for children, and he will be in the shop Saturday, Feb. 27 for a book signing in the morning and Make Your Own Hidden Pictures Happy Hour events that afternoon.

The four-week workshop beginning February 2 at the Makers Company is modeled after courses he teaches at Greenville Technical College. Participants of this workshop will work on developing plot and characters, illustrations that help tell a story and tips on how to proceed with publishing your own work. This workshop meets each Tuesday in February, 6:30 p.m. - 8:30 p.m., and is $115 for all 4 weeks.

Davis will be in the shop February 27 from  10 a.m to  noon for a book signing and hidden pictures scavenger hunt. This event is free. Following, Davis will host two Makers Happy Hour sessions on making your own hidden pictures. Sessions are open to all ages and start at 1 p.m. and 2:30 p.m. Cost $20 per person attending.

Currently, the Makers Company's Visiting Artist Series is planned to highlight five local and regional artists throughout the year. As part of the series, artists debut new or unseen work in the shop. Davis will be debuting to the public his original tracing paper and pencil sketches from his Highlights Series, among other things. 

The Travelers Rest Makers Company, which opened in September of 2015, is located in downtown Travelers Rest at 3 S. Main St.
