Local fire departments install free smoke alarms in area homes
GREENVILLE COUNTY – The American Red Cross is partnering with local fire departments to help install free smoke alarms in homes that need them.
The effort is part of the nonprofit's nationwide Home Fire Campaign, which includes providing the alarms to the local departments for distribution.
Residents in the fire districts of North Greenville, Travelers Rest, Slater-Marietta, Duncan Chapel and Glassy Mountain can contact their local departments to have their home checked and detectors installed for free.
In addition to installing any missing alarms that are required by building codes (including one in each bedroom, etc.), firefighters will replace any detector that is more than five years old, according to North Greenville Fire Dept. Lt. Jason Smith.
