She graduated from Traveler’s Rest High School in 1958; graduated from Furman University in 1962. She also has a master’s degree from Clemson University. She married the love of her life in 1964 in Greenville, SC. Her first teaching job was at the historic Parker High School where she taught American History. She was recently able to attend a 50th Reunion at Parker and was loved and will be missed by so many of her students there. She served as an Adult Education teacher at Greenville Technical College for the next few years and when she retired from Greenville Technical College, she served as the Dean of the Arts Division. Her life-long commitment to education has had far reaching impact in the lives of her coworkers and students.

Surviving are her beloved husband of 52 years, Fred Lee Haggard, daughters Camille Guthrie (Robert) and Rachel Montjoy (Scott), grandchildren Amanda Montjoy, Daniel Guthrie, Arden Montjoy and Samuel Guthrie and sisters Billie Shaw (Charles) and Doris Addis.

These words will not be enough to express how much Lyla was loved and will be missed. The characteristic she will be most remembered for is her love of others. Every day of her life was spent showing love to her family and friends. Her generosity with hospitality has blessed many people.

What Lyla would want you to know about her is not her accomplishments or even the acts of kindness; she would want you to know that her love for others grew from her love for Jesus Christ her Lord and Savior. Her hope was in Jesus alone and she is in Heaven with Him now.
