Boy Scouts 'Hooked on Scouting' month offers free fishing poles

UPSTATE, S.C. — During November, all new Boy Scouts in the Upstate will receive a new fishing pole for joining, and they will be able to try them out at the Polar Bear Fishing Derby in December.

Scouting activities include camping, hiking, fishing, shooting sports, rock climbing, rappelling, backpacking and scuba. The Cub Scout program is for boys in grades kindergarten to fifth, while boys ages 11-17 join the Boy Scout program.

Scouting offers programs for young men and women ages 14-20 that offer high adventure activities, such as handguns, whitewater rafting, ATVs and cave exploration. The same age group can participate in career-oriented programs focused on law enforcement, fire fighting, EMS and more.

STEM Scouts is scouting’s newest program that focuses on Science, Technology, Engineering and Math. The STEM scouts program is open to any boy or girl grades 3-5.
