Travelers Rest man charged following fatal wreck
TRAVELERS REST, S.C. – Police have charged a Travelers Rest man with felony DUI following a crash on Tubbs Mountain Road that claimed the life of a 70-year-old man.
Donald Ray Brown, of Travelers Rest, was the driver of a vehicle that was struck by an SUV just north of Williams Road around 5:30 p.m. Wednesday. Brown had to be extricated from his car and was flown to Greenville Memorial Hospital, where he later died, according to the Greenville County Coroner's Office.
The collision was discovered by police a short time after an officer saw a black SUV cross a double yellow line on Poinsett Highway, according to Police Chief Lance Crowe.
The officer activated his lights and siren and turned around to stop the vehicle, which he saw turn onto Tubbs Mountain Road. The officer followed the SUV, but decided to call off the pursuit after the vehicle sped away, Crowe said.
After turning onto Williams Road, the officer returned to Tubbs Mountain Road, where he found the two-car collision a short time later.
According to warrants, Robert Lewis Frady, Jr., identified by police as the driver of the SUV, was arrested Thursday evening on charges of DUI/felony driving under the influence resulting in death, failure to stop for blue lights and DUI/driving under suspension.
Frady, 50, was arrested at the time of his release from the hospital and is currently being held in the Greenville County Detention Center with no bond, Crowe said.
