27-year-old Landrum man shot and killed after chase

TRAVELERS REST, S.C. — A 27-year Landrum man was shot and killed by Greenville County deputies following a police chase that began in Travelers Rest on Sunday night.

The chase began around 7 p.m. when a Travelers Rest Police Dept. officer began pursuing a suspected drunken driver. A Greenville County deputy spotted the vehicle just north of city limits and initiated a traffic stop, but the motorist refused, according to Greenville County Sheriff's Office Sgt. Ryan Flood.

With speeds of 35-40 m.p.h., the pursuit continued north on Geer Highway into Marietta, where the driver of the vehicle turned around and headed south towards Travelers Rest again. Once through Travelers Rest, the man crashed into a deputy's vehicle but was able to continue on towards Berea, Flood said.

As the pursuit continued down Cedar Lane Road in Greenville, speeds increased and deputies were able to forcibly stop the driver, who spun out and crashed into a business. 

Flood said that the man, later identified by the Greenville County Coroner's Office as Jacob Paul McCarty, armed himself with a pistol while still in the vehicle.

Deputies attempted to negotiate with McCarty, but he "ultimately turned the firearm at deputies and presented it in a threatening manner," Flood said.

McCarty was transported to Greenville Memorial Hospital, where he died.

An autopsy on Monday showed McCarty died from multiple gunshot wounds to the torso, the coroner's office said.

SLED is investigating the shooting.
