John Crook Sr., 97 - Marietta

John (Jack) Miles Crook, Sr. 97, of Marietta, South Carolina, went to be with the Lord after a long life of giving on Saturday, February 3, 2018 in his home with his loving wife of 68 years, Annabel Kizer Crook and his loving family by his side.

Born July 13, 1920 in Quitman, Mississippi, Jack was the second of seven children of the late Harry and Anne Crook. As a young man, Jack served in the Civilian Conservation Corps. Shortly after the beginning of World War II, Jack bravely volunteered to serve in the United States Marine Corps for four years in the Pacific. Jack then earned a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering from the University of South Carolina in Columbia. Jack worked for JE Sirrine Co. of Greenville as the materials handling staff engineer from 1967 until his retirement in 1985.

Jack was an adventurist who enjoyed a very active outdoorsman’s life. He loved fishing, hunting, camping and vegetable gardening. He loved and played music and was a master craftsman who could design and build anything. He designed and built a very fine fishing and sport boat and four beautiful homes for his family. Jack and Annabel attended the Marietta First Baptist Church in Marietta for many years. Jack was a member of a Masonic Lodge in Franklin, Virginia and laid the cornerstone of their new hospital. He served as the Scout Master of Troop 17 of Eastland Baptist Church in Greenville from 1968 to 1971.

In addition to his parents, Jack was preceded in death by his brothers Harland and Gaines, sisters Ruth Carter and Ouita Fleming and two infant siblings.

Jack leaves behind his beloved sons, John Miles Crook, Jr. of Marietta and William Henry Crook of Greenville and grandson Jeffrey Aaron Crook of Greer and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Jack devoted his life to his family and friends. He raised his sons to be kind and considerate men and he loved teaching them many useful craftsman skills and mentoring them through their lives. He was a loving, kind and generous person to all. He took a genuine interest in other people’s lives. He had a great sense of humor and always looked on the bright side of life. Jack will be loved, cherished and remembered by everyone he ever knew into eternity.

Visitation services will be held at The Howze Mortuary, 6714 State Park Road, Travelers Rest, S.C. 29690 on Monday, February 5, 2018 from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.

Graveside services will be conducted at Memorial Park Cemetery, 2720 Broughton, Orangeburg, S.C. 29115 on Tuesday, February 6, 2918 at 3 p.m. Memorials may be made to any church or charity.
