Travelers Rest homeowner shoots intruder, deputies say (updated)

TRAVELERS REST, S.C. — A man who reportedly broke into a home in Travelers Rest Monday night was shot by the homeowner, according to the Greenville County Sheriff's Office.

Deputies responded to a home in the 200 block of Blue Ridge Drive near Shelton Road around 10 p.m. last night for a report of a shooting.

Warrants allege that 30-year-old James Michael Smith, Jr., also of Travelers Rest, broke a window and entered the home, threatening the homeowners once inside.

Deputies said Smith was shot at least once after being verbally warned by the homeowner. 

Smith was initially treated at Greenville Memorial Hospital, but he was later transported to the Greenville County Detention Center.

Smith is charged with first degree burglary and possession of marijuana, according to warrants.

The victims did not know Smith, who was also carrying a knife, according to warrants.
