Margaret Dillard, 81 - Greenville

Margaret “Peggy” Humphries Dillard, 81, of Greenville, died Tuesday, April 24, 2018, at her home near Travelers Rest.

Born in Cherokee County, South Carolina, she was the daughter of the late Royce W. Humphries and Ella Sanders Humphries. She graduated from the Greenville General Hospital School of Nursing and worked as a Registered Nurse in a career that spanned more than 40 years.

Active in the Greenville community, Mrs. Dillard served as a board member and president of the Greenville General Hospital School of Nursing Alumni Association, was a board member and president of the Clarice Wilson Garden Club, and a board member of the Greenville County Council of Garden Clubs. An avid azalea grower, she was recipient of the National Council of Garden Clubs’ Horticulture Award. She was also a member of the Greenville County Legal Auxiliary and a communicant of Christ Episcopal Church.

Mrs. Dillard was a leader in many historical societies, serving as state and national awards chairwoman of the Daughters of the American Colonists, regent of the Nathaniel Greene Chapter of the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution, vice regent of the Piedmont Chapter of the National Society of the Daughters of the American Colonists, secretary of the South Carolina State Daughters of the American Colonists, registrar for the Greenville Chapter of the United Daughters of the Confederacy, and registrar of the Reedy River Falls chapter of the Colonial Dames of the XVII Century.

Mrs. Dillard is survived by her husband of 57 years, John M. Dillard, and four children, Leslie D. Williams (Frank) of Camden, SC, Margaret E. Dillard of Crofton, MD, Mary Foster Cox (William) of Camden, SC, and John M. Dillard Jr. (Jas) of Charlotte, NC. She is also survived by two sisters, Brenda H. Humphrey and Jimmie H. Lowery, and eight loving grandchildren.

The family appreciates the love and care given to Mrs. Dillard by her caregivers in Greenville and at the Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, MD where she participated in the advancement of pancreatic cancer research.

Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday, May 2, 2018, at 3 p.m. at Markley Chapel of Christ Episcopal Church. Interment will be in the family plot in Springwood Cemetery in a private family service. The family will receive friends at the Poinsett Club in Greenville following the funeral service.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the charity of one's choice.
