Travelers Rest Student Council earns national recognition

TRAVELERS REST, S.C. — The Travelers Rest High School Student Council has been awarded a 2019 National Gold Council of Excellence Award by the National Association of Student Councils, it was recently announced.

The award, which Travelers Rest has now received for eleven consecutive years, aims to recognize student councils that exemplify leadership and service in activities that serve to improve the school and community.

To meet the requirements for the award, a student council must meet a variety of criteria. In addition to basic requirements such as a written constitution, regular meetings, a democratic election process, and membership in NASC, councils are also judged on appreciation activities, student recognition programs, school and community service projects, spirit activities, goal setting, financial planning, and more.

"Receiving an NASC National Gold Council of Excellence Award reflects the highest dedication on the part of the school to providing a strong, well-rounded student council program," said Ann Postelwaite, National Association of Secondary School Principals student programs director.

“For our Student Council to be named a National Gold Council of Excellence is an amazing achievement, but to earn this honor for ten consecutive years is beyond comprehension," said Principal Lou Lavely. "Our Student Council works hard every day to provide the best possible leadership for our students and our school and this recognition severs to demonstrate that our Student Council is the best of the best."

Last year, Travelers Rest was one of only two schools in the state to have earned the award for ten consecutive years.
