James Cartner, 64 - Travelers Rest
James Smoot Cartner, 64, of Travelers Rest, passed away, Thursday, February 13, 2020, while bicycling, which is something he loved to do.
James was a man of many talents and hobbies. He loved woodworking, painting, traveling, backpacking, sinking his toes in the sand, and eating ice cream cones with his grandkids, who they lovingly called Papa.
Born in Salisbury, NC , he was a son of the late James Smoot Cartner, Sr., and Beatrice Snider Cartner. Mr. Cartner retired as Senior Vice President at Fluor Corporation, and was a member and Deacon of Taylors First Baptist Church.
Surviving are his wife: Gina Lefler Cartner, of forty-two years; one son: Jacob Cartner (Tricia); one daughter: Lauren Rowland (Chad); one brother: Terry Cartner; and six grandchildren: Dakota Cartner, Corban Cartner, Sage Cartner, Oliver Rowland, Stetson Rowland, and Georgia Grace Rowland.
Along with his parents, he was predeceased by one sister: Margalene Burwell.
The family will receive friends Monday afternoon from 1:30 p.m. until 2:45 p.m. in the Gathering Space of Taylors First Baptist Church. A Memorial service will follow at 3:00 p.m. in the Church Sanctuary.
The family will be at the home.
James was involved as a Missions Strategy Coordinator for Taylors First Baptist and would desire in lieu of flowers, that memorials be made to REACH Scholarships at Taylors First Baptist Church, 200 W. Main St., Taylors, SC 29687.
