Vernon Garrett, 97 - Tryon
Vernon Wallace Garrett, 97, formerly of Grandview Circle, Travelers Rest, SC, passed away peacefully at White Oak Manor of Tryon, NC, on April 6, 2020.
Born on August 21, 1922 in Pickens County, SC, he was a son of the late James Fred Garrett, Sr. and Stella Mae Cook Garrett. Vernon was the last surviving member of his immediate family of eight children, including two sets of twins. Vernon’s twin, Vera Webb Garrett, passed away as an infant in 1923. He was predeceased by twins, James Fred Garrett, Jr. and Frances Alberta Garrett Roper (John); Helen Florine Garrett; Frank Marion Garrett (Margaret); Charles Wesley Garrett and George Watson Garrett (Arlene).
Vernon served in the US Navy as a Pharmacist’s Mate Second Class during World War II (1942-1946). He was stationed primarily in the South Pacific (Wellington, New Zealand) and Portsmouth, Virginia. He met his wife of sixty-eight years (Myra Donald Garrett) in Washington, DC. For more than thirty years, they owned Skyway Airstream Dealership in Travelers Rest. He was a faithful member and volunteer at Taylors First Baptist Church.
Surviving are his two daughters, Beverly Nivens, Susan McKinney and her husband Bill; his three grandchildren, Lydia Wallis Larson (Phil), Claire Nivens Pasquinelli (Rich), and Brandon Hunter Nivens; and his two great grandchildren, Audrey Mae Larson and Phillip Larson, Jr.; and a sister-in-law, Arlene Bell Garrett.
A private Memorial Service at Mountain View Memorial Park will be held at a later date.
