Dr. Thomas Walter "Walt" Brashier, Sr., 86 - Travelers Rest

Dr. Thomas Walter "Walt" Brashier, Sr., 86, passed away peacefully on March 24, 2021, at the McCall Hospice House. Born in Fork Shoals, South Carolina, he was the son of the late Ralph and Edith Brashier.

Dr. Brashier graduated from Furman University in 1959 and attended Erskine Theological Seminary and Southeastern Theological Seminary. Because of his passion for education and Christian leadership, he was awarded Doctor of Humanities from Charleston Southern University, Doctor of Christian Leadership from North Greenville University, Doctor of Humanities from Anderson University, The Citadel Leader of Principal Award and Business Hall of Fame, and the Order of the Palmetto from The State of South Carolina. He was instrumental in bringing the technical school system to Greenville. His generous land donations have benefited Greenville Tech, many colleges, the Travelers Rest YMCA and many area churches. He and his wife, Christine have established endowed scholarships at Charleston Southern University, The Citadel, Anderson University, North Greenville University, Bob Jones University, and Greenville Technical College.

Dr. Brashier dedicated his life to God through his family, his Christian ministry, many businesses and his philanthropy. He was a wise businessman who developed many apartment complexes in the Greenville area. He was involved in commercial real estate and land acquisitions. One of his most rewarding investments was founding Scenic Hills Baptist Church. He was respected by all and a mentor to many. He will be greatly missed by the family he loved so much, the Greenville community, his friends, his real estate associates, his employees and his church family. Walter Brashier would tell you that he had a wonderful life dedicated to serving God and helping others, and he would encourage you do to do the same.

Walter is survived by his wife of 68 years, Christine McKinney Brashier; his daughter, Kathy Brashier Higgins (John); his sons, Thomas Walter Brashier Jr., and Ted Brashier (Angela). He is also survived by his thirteen grandchildren, Ben Duncan (Christy), Walt Brashier III (Melissa), Wesley Brashier (Caitlin), Christy Brashier Groome (John), Brian Duncan (Kelley), Matthew Brashier (Mary Leslie), Caroline Brashier Benedict (Jeff), Daniel Brashier, Georgia Brashier, Rachel Brashier, Leah Brashier, Eli Brashier, and Ivy Brashier; eleven great grandchildren, Hayden Brashier, Beau Brashier, Ella Brashier, Louis Brashier, Lucas Groome, Lydia Groome, Everly Brashier, Sawyer Duncan, Ansley Duncan, Avery Brashier and Tilman Duncan; he is also survived by his sister, Faye Brashier Brown (Johnny Mack), as well as many nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Glenn Brashier; his son, Tim Brashier, and his great granddaughter, Clara Grace Brashier.

A private family graveside service was held at Woodlawn Memorial Park.
