Maxine Ledford, 78 - Marietta

Maxine Ledford, 78, of Marietta, South Carolina passed away on October 23, 2021. Maxine was a lifelong resident of Marietta and was a highly praised science teacher for Greenville County Schools for 35 years.
After graduating from Slater-Marietta High School, she went on to graduate with a Bachelor of Science degree from Winthrop University, and received her Master’s degree from Furman University. She was also a member of Alpha Delta Kappa, the International Honorary Organization for Women Educators. Most of her teaching career was spent at Monaview Junior High, Parker Middle School, and Lakeview Middle School. Many of her closest friends began as colleagues where she taught. She had a passion for teaching and touched the lives of hundreds of students over the course of her 35 years in the classroom. She often joked that she loved it so much, she had to retire twice. Even after retirement she was often found volunteering in classrooms and school libraries.
Maxine was a voracious reader and devoured novels at an astonishing rate. In addition, she was an avid collector of antiques and enjoyed decorating her home and her classroom for the next holiday season. The Christmas season was her absolute favorite time of year. Her Christmas trees were a sight to behold. It has been said that one tree in particular was cause for the great blackout of 1988.
Maxine is survived by her husband and high school sweetheart, Lawrence Ledford of Marietta, SC; her sister-in-law Carole Looper of Marietta, SC; nephews Cheney Looper (Shasta) of Dacusville, SC; Casey Looper (Elayne) of Marietta, SC; niece Cherie Looper of Berea, SC; Cameron Ledford of Greenville, SC; and several great nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents, Rudy Looper and Edna Few Looper, and her twin brother, Max Looper.
Pall bearers will be Cheney Looper, Casey Looper, Cameron Ledford, Michael Looper, Lance Ledford, Phil Pittman, and Zeb Pittman.
Visitation will be held at The Howze Mortuary in Travelers Rest, SC on Friday, October 29, 2021, from 1:00 p.m. until 1:50 p.m. with the funeral service to follow in the Howze Mortuary Chapel at 2:00 p.m. Her burial will be at Mountain View Memorial Park in Travelers Rest, SC at 3 pm.
