Travelers Rest firefighter 'stable' following cardiac arrest
TRAVELERS REST, S.C. – A Travelers Rest firefighter is in stable condition after going into cardiac arrest following training exercises Tuesday night, according to Travelers Rest Fire Chief Richard Johnson.
Sean Irvin, who has been with the department around three years, collapsed at his vehicle around 9:30 p.m.
“We'd been training at a remote location and were back at the station when Sean collapsed,” Johnson said, adding that almost the whole department was present at the time of the incident.
“We had virtually our whole department respond,” he said. “Firefighters couldn't find a pulse, and they started CPR immediately.”
Greenville County EMS units arrived a short time later and worked to further stabilize Irvin before transporting him to Greenville Memorial Hospital, where he remains at this time.
“The next 48 to 72 hours will be critical,” Johnson said, adding that Irvin is one of the department's “most loyal volunteers.”
