Prescription Drug Take-Back Day set for Saturday
TRAVELERS REST, S.C. – On Saturday, Sept. 27, the Travelers Rest Police Dept. will host a collection site for area residents to take expired, unneeded, or unwanted prescription drugs.
Part of the Ninth National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day, the aim is to provide a safe, convenient, and responsible means of disposing of prescription drugs.
According to law enforcement officials, unused medications in homes can create a public health and safety concern because they can be accidentally ingested, stolen, misused, and abused.
And while the number of Americans who currently abuse prescription drugs dropped in 2013 to 6.5 million from 6.8 million in 2012, that is still more than double the number of those using heroin, cocaine, and hallucinogens combined, according to the 2013 National Survey on Drug Use and Health.
The Travelers Rest Police Dept. collection site will operate from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at City Hall, located at 6711 State Park Rd.
Only pills and other solids, like patches, can be brought to the collection site — liquids and needles or other sharps will not be accepted.
