Mayor proclaims Dr. Lamar McCarrell Day in Travelers Rest
TRAVELERS REST, S.C. – Travelers Rest Mayor Wayne McCall proclaimed Friday, Oct. 17 to be Dr. Lamar McCarrell Day, recognizing the area resident for his work with Spirit of '45 Upstate, a WWII commemoration that he helped bring to Travelers Rest.
The celebration, which first began in 2011 with a public ceremony at Travelers Rest City Hall, is now a multi-day event honoring veterans and other members of the “greatest generation."
In October 2013, the Travelers Rest Historical Society, who sponsors the Upstate event, was recognized for the Spirit of '45 Upstate with an Award of Merit from the American Association for State and Local History, and earlier this year a national Spirit of '45 delegation visited Travelers Rest, in part to recognize the strides the Upstate celebration has made since its inception.
"Largely as a result of Dr. McCarrell’s efforts, Spirit of ’45 Upstate has been designated as the model for the state of South Carolina," McCall said.
Spirit of '45 Day is celebrated the second Sunday in August.
